中国科学院天津工业生物技术研究所马延和研究员带领团队，在国际上首次实现在实验室中从二氧化碳到淀粉分子的全合成。天津工业生物所所长马延和表示：“这也意味着，我们所需要的淀粉，今后可以将二氧化碳作为原料，通过类似酿造啤酒的过程，在生产车间中制造出来。”
研究团队开发了一个人工淀粉合成途径（artificial starch anabolic pathway, ASAP），由11个核心反应组成。简单而言，这个过程是通过使用无机催化剂将二氧化碳还原为甲醇，再通过酶转化为三碳和六碳糖单位，最后转化为聚合淀粉。
